You can open a brokerage account within your Trust Administration Services' self-directed retirement account if you decide you would like to purchase publicly traded stocks and bonds.
By opening a brokerage portfolio within your account at TRUST, you can consolidate your retirement accounts under one custodian, yet still maintain the freedom to trade marketable securities as well as investing in alternative investments. Mutual fund transactions can also be executed from directly within your account with us. We will work with your financial advisor, broker dealer or on-line trading service as long as the firm will hold third-party custodial accounts.
To open a brokerage portfolio within your retirement account, simply complete the TRUST Standard Investment Authorization Form. The brokerage account will be opened at the firm of your choice in the name of your retirement account. For example: title to the stocks and bonds would be held in the name of your IRA account (First Regional Bank c/f Client Name) with the TRUST tax identification number. The account at the brokerage firm is not listed as a retirement account, but rather treated as a regular "street" account. As your retirement account custodian, we handle all the necessary IRS tax reporting of your account. All contributions and distributions are still handled from your main retirement account with TRUST, not through the brokerage account.
Maintaining a brokerage account within your TRUST retirement account allows for more timely movement of funds between the accounts. If you have a separate IRA at a brokerage firm, each movement of funds would require either a rollover or an IRA Transfer Letter which can take several weeks to process.
